MTD eligibility checker

Last updated: 17 October 2026

Do I need Making Tax Digital for Income Tax? Answer five questions to find out if and when MTD applies to you, and what to do next. It takes about a minute, and nothing you enter leaves your browser.

Question 1 of 5

Do you get income from self-employment or property?

Self-employment means working for yourself as a sole trader. Property means rent from a UK or foreign property, including your share of one you own jointly.

How the checker works

It uses HMRC’s rules, checked against GOV.UK on 15 October 2026. Your qualifying income is your self-employment turnover plus your rent, before expenses. MTD applies from 6 April 2026 if it was over £50,000 on your 2024-25 return, from 6 April 2027 if over £30,000 on your 2025-26 return, and from 6 April 2028 if over £20,000 on your 2026-27 return.
